Street Food Block Party

The Toronto Underground Market and Toronto Food Trucks threw together a Street Food Block Party this past Saturday May 5, at Evergreen Brick Works.Tickets were $20 and over 3,000 tickets were sold out within a few hours.

We arrive around 5:30, doors open at 5. There was almost no parking but we lucked out and caught someone leaving. I quickly signaled and turned in before another car, who pulled up and tried to signal for it too. Tip! Come early for parking… Very limited. As soon as we got in, we started looking at the map and making a loop around. Most places had an early menu and a late night menu too.

Our first tasting was from Toasted Tangerine food truck. Good Chili but nothing to rave about.

My friend went to the Buster’s Sea Cove food truck for some fish tacos and lobster rolls. The lobster roll was excellent and packed with lobster meat for $12. Definitely a highlight that evening. Apparently, Rock Lobster’s version was much smaller, not as good or worth the wait.

Lobster Roll

We tried the table vendors next. Ese’ slider sandwich was decent but nothing crazy. Bestia had an amazing fried rice medallions w/ pork ragu & buffalo ricotta! Unique flavours and I liked it. Apparently a truck to be!

Next, we lined up for El Gastro which had some crazy stuff… Maybe a little too crazy for our liking. The Drunken Monkey, banana fritter, smoked chocolate & tequila ice cream with candied jalapenos was interesting but not my cup of tea. The Reef + Beef twice-cooked beek cheek with anchovy tacos was a little too pickled tasting but decent.

We moved to the next truck which was for Gorilla Cheese. Little did we know the line moves insanely slow and we probably waited about 2 hours!  During the wait, we had Babi and co., which was Indonsian street food. Pretty good meat on a stick.

While we waited, I picked up cupcakes from Sullivan & Bleeker, bacon caramel popcorn from The Picnic Society and a triple chocolate with salted corn nuts donut from Dough by Rachel for home. Cupcakes and the popcorn were good but the donut gets the win. The flavours were not too sweet, salty or rich. It was perfect with the sweet chocolate and salty kernels. Something new I haven’t had before. Next time, I’m going to have it fresh.

On the way to drop the cupcakes in the car, someone from Bluebird gave me a sample of their Smoked Chicken & Charred Sweet Corn Grilled Cheese. It was very delicious! Nice and toasted on the outside with flavorful chicken inside. We also had the Caplansky’s deli truck ; smoked meat poutine and the bacon beef maple donuts. I was hesitant on the donut but then decided why not only $3! And they were actually really good!  Tasted like a sour cream timbit with some bacon bits and maple syrup. It was quite unique compared to their poutine which was Mehhh.

Finally, after the long wait, we got our sandwiches and they were pretty good but not worth 2 hours in line… Maybe 1 hour. I had the lumberjack which was the maple bacon and granny smith apple grilled cheese.

By 10:30pm,  it was dark, late and most vendors were selling out. Good time to go if you don’t want lines! Chris was still going and enjoyed another lobster roll, pulled pork sandwich from Fidel Gastro and cupcakes from cupcake diner. I had a bite and the sandwich was good, wish I got their sloppy joes from Fidel earlier. The cupcake was a little dry.

We called it a night and headed home. Overall, it was fun and filling. The lines were decent (except for Gorilla Cheese), there was live music and I had good company. I would recommended it. Next time, I would rather go to a Yumtum though because I don’t think the foods from the trucks were as strong as the tables but that might because everyone was doing a Mexican menu due to Cinco De mayo.

Happy eating~
