Waterfall Repelling
It was another groupon that attracted me to waterfall repelling with H20 Repelling. The activity was discounted to $75 and you repel from Lower Decew Falls in St. Catherines.
We started the 3 hour tour at 2:00pm and geared up with our harnesses and helmet. We hiked down into the gorge which was a steep muddy drop but fun and a little thrilling.Half of the group hiked in river towards Upper Decew Falls. It was a short 5 minute hike but the experience was great and new to me. I really enjoyed it. The greenery was very relaxing and the river was calming.
One we got to the bottom of Upper Decew Falls, we just relaxed and enjoyed being in waist deep water. We tried putting our backs against the waterfall but it really hurt from the pressure! It was like a painful massage. We also went behind the falls, which reminded me of Iceland.
We hiked towards Lower Decew Falls where the actually repelling takes place. The other half of the group was done so it was our turn. It was a bit nerve wreaking because you’re strapped onto a long rope tied over the falls and then you walk backwards to the edge and the rope system continues to pull you directly over the falls. Then when you’re over the falls, you release another rope you’re holding this whole time to lower yourself down the falls! Then like any other repelling, you are walking and bouncing down the falls. Sounds more complicated than it is. Once you start, it get’s pretty simple and easy like repelling down a rock but with water. I wore googles because I didn’t want water to get in my eyes and flush my contact out… Smart idea because I could keep my eyes open the whole time. But you have no idea how close you are to the ground because all you see it water. It was really quick, maybe 20-30 seconds?
This was a great waterfall to repel on for the first time but I definitely felt like I wanted more… More falls and more height. I also wished we got to try another fall because we only get that once chance on this 3 hour tour. We went back for a group photo at the Upper Decew Falls and then wrapped up the tour.
The tour was good but I felt the actually repelling part was too quick and short for the price and the fact that it was a 3 hour tour. The river walk and relaxing under Upper Decew Falls definitely added to the experience but some locals were doing that without a tour guide. I don’t think I’ll repelling on Decew falls again but I will definitely try waterfall repelling elsewhere.
