[Trip] Jays Peak, Vermont

After our fun trip to Smuggler’s Notch last year, I knew I had to do another DC events snowboarding trip this year. I decided on Jays Peak, Vermont since I’ve never been there and they have a indoor waterpark.

Day 1 – Friday Jan 24, 2014

We boarded our bus thursday night and headed to Vermont. We arrive in the morning around 8:00am and checked in to the Tram Haus Lodge. We stayed in the two bedroom suite which was well decorated and comfortable. Our balcony view was basically the mountain and the lifts —awesome!

We hit the slopes right away an started on the smaller green hills. It was very cold and icy but it didn’t stop us from going up to the summit. We took a tram to the top. It was really slow… Not like the high speed gondola from Tremblant. The view at top was lovely but I still like Tremblant more.

After a few runs, we headed back for a pizza and sleep.

Day 2 – Saturday Jan 25, 2014

I was the first to awake since I went to bed the earliest. It was 7:30am and the lifts start at 8:30am. Perfect opportunity to try  snowboarding down “first tracks” which I’ve never done. Reagon was also surprisingly awake so we shared our first shred down powder together from the summit. It was nice but still a bit icy.

Reagon went back to his room and Chi Wai and Mark joined me instead. After two more runs, we headed back to our lodge and made some bacon and eggs breakfast. We ate quickly and then we headed out for the tram and a few more runs.

Man! It was windy —the winds were strong enough to stop us on flattish terrain. We snowboarded until the lifts stopped at 4:00pm and went back to the lodge.

We ate dinner at Foundry’s Pub and Grill and then got ready for the Dc events waterpark party! The waterpark started out quiet and then got packed. I got to try almost all the slides before the lines started forming. There was one slide, “The Chute” that shoots you down 65miles/hr. I was a little scared that the water would flush out my contacts so I planned to go on it near the end… But then the 40 minute line up just was ridiculous.

I did get to try to flow rider surf machine. There are two options; stand up surfing or bodysurfing. was nervous to try stand up surfing since it would have been a wipeout disaster and my contacts would fall out. The lines were also so long. Instead, I went on the bodysurfing side. It’s super fun but also dangerous because the waves TOTALLY push your bikini top and bottom off. Yeah… I flashed quite a bunch of people that night. Luckily I won’t see anyone of them again.

We “relaxed” in the crowded lazy river and hot tubs and then went back to the room. Next time, I’ll go try the chute before the lines form and wear a one piece for the surf machine.

Day 3 – Sunday Jan 26, 2014

Chi and I woke up the earliest and was ready to hit the slopes. It was a very windy day and the main tram and higher lifts were not running. That didn’t stop us! We took the small lift to snowboard down the other side. I was stuck on flat terrain and as I released my bindings, the racket got stuck. We went to the rental shop and got fixed.

We took the highest lift, Bonaventure Quad running that morning and saw a stunning view at the top. I liked this view the most. The run was also scenic!

Me against the mountain

Half way down… somehow Chi twisted the wrong way and dislocated his shoulder. I saw it happened but assumed he caught an edge. He didn’t wipe out or crash. Luckily, I stopped shortly after to tell him to make a quick right. I saw him sitting there with another snowboarder. He took his board off and I was like “oh shit, something happened!” I hoped it was a binding failure but nope, it was his shoulder. He tore a muscle two year ago at Blue Mountain so it must not have healed properly. I took my board off to hold his… But then my board fell over and slid down! Aw shit! I ran after it with no hopes of catching up to it. Luckily, it was stopped by a patch of trees. I went in slowly and grabbed it out from the deep snow. Chi and I walked down went to first aid. He was advised to go to the hospital in Canada so we went back to our lodge to pack.

Our bus picked us up at 3:00pm and we got back at 2:00am because of the snowy weather and traffic. I dropped Chi off at the emergency room to get his shoulder popped back in and head home. Despite the events on last day, the trip was fun and made me remember how much I love snowboarding. It was the first time I went this season and I have two more trips coming up… Can’t wait!
