[Trip] New York City
New York, a destination I keep returning to because there is such so much to see, do and EAT. This time I visited to eat, celebrate my friend’s wedding and reunite with some university friends.
The Food
Wow, everything was simply delicious and something I would go running back to!
- Halal Guys: Believe the hype, it’s phenomenal middle eastern food. Check out the new restaurant for seating.
- Lady M: It is not cheap but their 20 layered crepe cake was soft, light and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Not too sweet… Just fluffy and perfect.
- Miss Lily’s: Jenny, our New York foodie resident recommended this place. Boy, was it good! Best jerk chicken I’ve had…and my goodness that Jerk Corn rivals and might even beat my ultimate favourite corn (Cuban corn from Cafe Habana)
- Magnolia Bakery: I’ve had their infamous cupcakes on my last trip but was disappointed. My co-worker suggested the banana pudding and boy, was she right! It was delicious light cream folded with chunks of banana and cake.
- Dominique Ansel Bakery: They are known for the cronuts and I was determined to try one. It was very tasty and I would have it again but I’m not sure if I would wait in line for it. The DKA (Dominque Kouign Amann) was disappointing and not like the epic Montreal one I love. However, the fresh lemony madelines were lovely. But, the real winner was the frozen s’more, a scoop of vanilla ice cream wrapped in chocolate wafer bits and then enveloped in a marshmallow torched to order. It was epic and worth the $7 price tag.
- Xi’an Famous Foods: The handmade noodles were fantastic! Chewy and quite unique to what I’ve had before. The meat and sauce was well-paired too.
- Brooklyn Bagel: What a surprise stop! I googled a breakfast/bagel place near our hotel and found this gem with high reviews. The bagel was fresh, salty and toasty. What blew me away was the limitless spreads! It was overwhelming… Like a gelato shop! I had the scallion cream cheese and lox… Amazing and just as good as I remember Murray’s Bagels (another NY stapled bagel shop)
- Doughnut Plant: This is the second time I’ve been but this time, the passion fruit yeast donut was much more memorable. It was soft, fluffy and sweet with a tangy passion fruit flavour.
- Big Gay Ice Cream: Although it was good, my “Salty Pimp” wasn’t crazy impressive. I’d come back if I was in the area for some soft serve but I’d try something else on the menu.
The Do’s
We tried to get on Jimmy Fallons the tonight show but they only took the first 15 people… We were 24-26. We also roam around midtown and explore the Times Square’s Toys’r’us. Cassie and I also spent some alone girl time shopping around Soho. We didn’t do much… we ate, drank some ‘Gong Cha’ and enjoyed each others’ company.
The Wedding
Beautiful wedding and Jenny looked gorgeous and so happy. It was a blast taking silly photos in the photo booth and with the polaroid. The food was amazing (as expected from New York and Jenny, the foodie).
