Portland & Mount Hood, Oregon

Snowboarding in Park City wasn’t enough for us this season, we wanted to hit up another new mountain. Since we couldn’t go north (Canada!), we decided to head south to Mount Hood in Oregon

Day 1 – Saturday March 30, 2019

We packed our bed and headed down to Portland. I met up with Claire for a Japanese lunch at Afuri and caught up with her.

We then headed to the waterfront park for a stroll between the cherry blossoms. It was busy but it was a beautiful sunny day.

After some tax-free shopping and visiting Claires’ place, Chi and I went to Tasty and Alders for dinner. We lucked out and got a bar spot right away. It was some of the best food I’ve ever had.

We drove to Rhododendron, where our AirBnB was located 30 minutes from Mount Hood. Our cozy cabin in the wood was chic and modern. It also had a private hot tub in the yard. It was perfect.

Day 2 – Sunday March 31, 2019

We casually woke up around 9am and made a quick breakfast before hitting the slopes at Mount Hood Meadows. We weren’t sure what to expect because it was warm out, about 3°C but Portland was 19°C the day before. The snow, while a little slushy was actually really smooth and fun to ride.

It was a bluebird day with good spring conditions. Chi and I loved wide runs and minimal people. It was so much fun on my new snowboard!

We stopped for hot dogs on the mountain at Mazots and enjoyed it with a fantastic view of Mount Jefferson.

After our runs, we headed to Timberline Lodge to see what the fuss was about (and also use their bathrooms). I read it’s a historic site worth seeing… and so we did. It felt like setting back in time.

The views of Mount Hood from Timberline lodge were impressive. It reminded us of Whistler mountain.

We headed back to our cabin to enjoy the private hot tub, made dinner and had a cozy night in watching a Netflix animated series, Love Death + Robots. It was our romantic winter/spring getaway.

Day 3 – Monday April 1, 2019

I woke up uncertain of how the weather would be as I heard it would be wet and Chi forgot his waterproof jacket at home. But he was a champ and was adamant on going anyways. It ended up being a great fun day.

Our first run was groomed and smooth on Shooting Star Ridge. We loved it so much we went three times! We continued on more blues but the visibility and rain/snow slowly started.

It didn’t dampen our spirits. It was still fun to cruise on a empty mountain. Chi loved it and wants to take more Mondays off.

We then began our 4-hour drive home but stopped at Government Camp, the small village at the base. It had a few shops and resturants but nothing comparable to Whistler, Park City or Brekenridge.

It was a short season for us but next year, we will likely get a season pass and push ourselves to go more. We both loved Mount Hood Meadows… even more than Park City. The views were better, runs were wider, the terrain was more favorable to snowboarding and just less busy.
