The Clayroom
Two weekends ago, my design school friends and I had a private clay studio holiday party at The Clay Room. We all get to pick 1-3 objects to paint. After we finish, the studio will clear coat it and put it in the kiln to bake the paint. One week later, we pick up our object and get to see our art.
The private studio time costed us $15 as a studio fee plus the price of the object we wanted to paint. My mug was about $15 so it costed me $30 for the experience. With my $15 studio fee, I could have picked up to 3 more objects to paint if I wanted too. Check their website for pricing but it was definitely affordable.
To get started, you explore the shelves filled with different objects and pick what you want to paint. There were many options; plates, mugs, festive holiday ornaments, vases and fun objects like a android robot box, cupcake box, cute penguins and owls etc.
Next you pick your paint colours. There were over 40 colors and you can mix and do effects as you please. To achieve a deep pigment, 3 coats is required.
The staff at the clay room will bring you the paint and you can paint away! They have reference materials, stencils, stamps and other things to help you get going. They also have paint pens and pencils for finish details. We all became so serious and focused on our objects.
Our private studio time was only three hours and I didn’t end up finishing my third coat. But we are allowed to come back as long as you want to finish it.
This was a great way to spend time with friends and it was sometime new. Since my friends were designers, everyone had great ideas and their pieces all looked great!
