[Trip] Montreal & Mont Tremblant

GAH! I’m so behind on my blogging. Maybe because Feb has been soooo awesome! Okay, let’s start with Family Day long weekend… This is starting to be an annual trip —tremblant for family day long weekend. And yes, I would do it again next year. Chris and I got a great hotel groupbuy deal to Montreal. Our plan was to go to the city for food and pair it with snowboarding at Mont Tremblant.

Day 1 – Saturday February 16, 2013

We drove up early morning and headed to Olive and Gourmando for lunch. It was packed and everything looked delicious. While we waited for a table, we explored a nearby artisan boutique and I saw these really pretty earrings. But I decided not to buy them since I don’t wear earrings that often. Chris suggested getting them for me but I said “Nah!”. He then “secretly” bought them for me while I was in the shop… Ninja styles but not quite since it a small shop lol. He was adorable doing it though. He surprised me with them later that night which was sweet.

We went back for our table and order sandwiches and a shared soup.  Chris had “The Cubain” panini sandwich and I had the Cajun Chicken cold sandwich. It was delicious and flavorful. But the real winner was the chicken noodle soup… So tasty and different. We also bought a bag of sweet BBQ kettle chips which was soooo delicious!

After lunch, we explored the Montreal Science Centre and their exhibits. The temporary Musik exhibit was interactive and fun. You are given an android phone with headphones to explore and scan different marked spots. Each spot is unique and you learn about making music or interact with the space. The end goal is to make a song. My song sucked because there was a glitch and I had to button mash through it. But it was still fun and neat.

We explored some other permanent exhibits too. We picked facial features from a library and try to compose each other’s faces. Mine was definitely closer! It was hilarious. There was also this crazy music table that changes pitch, tempo, bass and noises when you move and flip these blocks. Really cool!

The science centre closed pretty early around 5pm. So we checked into our hotel, rested until it was dinner time at Leméac. It was delicious! I had the duck confit and Chris enjoyed the braised beef. For dessert, we had the chocolate profiteroles and the maple caramel French toast. Chris loved the French toast but I thought it was too sweet for my taste buds.

Day 2 – Sunday February 17, 2013

We overslept because Chris set the alarm for PM instead of AM but it wasn’t too bad. We rushed out and headed towards Mont Tremblant. There were lots of people but not as much as last year in my opinion. The lift lines were shorter.  We did a green run and moved onto the blues. It was so much fun and I was definitely getting better at my carves. The view was as fantastic as I remembered.

After a full day of boarding, we drove back to Montreal and got ready for dinner at Au Pied du Conchon. This restaurant was highly recommended by foodies and I’ve wanted to try it for a long time. Luckily, I made a reservation because they weren’t taking any walk ins. We order a bunch of dishes including smoked horse meat sandwich, marinated herring, bison tongue, fois gras poutine, Bison Temaki and the Duck in a Can.

The flavours were very unique but too strong for my liking. It was good but not “omfg I must eat here every time I’m in Montreal good” With that said, Chris loved it. His favorite dish was the marinated herring and mine was the bison tongue. The highly raved Duck in the Can was our least favourite…

Day 3 – Monday February 18, 2013

We had no plans but eat and pick up our foodie souvenirs. We had breakfast at L’Avenue and Chris loved his Bobby does Dallas (steak, eggs and BBQ sauce) and I decided to go with a classic standard breakfast.

We stopped at Point G for macarons and fairmont for bagels. A new place I wanted to try was Kouign Amann bakery and Tourtière Australienne. Kouign Amann was a small spot and  I picked up a Kouign Amann, a flakey sugary pie. I had it later in the car and omg! It was delicious. Not like any pastry I’ve had before. This is going on my “must buy” each time I’m in Montreal. Their croissants were good too but I had them a day after so they weren’t as fresh. At Tourtière Australienne, I picked up two frozen pies and brought them back home. The steak, bacon and cheese was good but the butter chicken pie was better. They were delicious and I would go back and get more curry pies. I’d love to try it fresh though.

Of course, we picked up Schwartz to go and headed back to Toronto. Perfect weekend getaway:  lots of amazing food, snowboarding and fun times with Chris. I’d do it again next year but maybe stay overnight in Tremblant for more winter activities.
