Killbear Provincial Park

At least once a year, I try go camping and explore a new park. This year was no exception and I got to visit Killbear Provincial Park. Even though, the weather wasn’t optimal, the park was my favourite yet.

Day 1 – Saturday August 30, 2014

On arrival, it was pouring and we frantically set up our tarps and tents in the rain. We all bought enough tarps… But not enough rope! Luckily, we made it work with four close-together trees on one of our sites. The rain soon stopped and we explored the blindbay campsite area. The sun came out as it was setting and there was a cool mist layer on the surface of the water. It was beautiful… Quite possibly one of the nicest sunsets I’ve seen!

The water was very clear and refreshing as I dipped my legs and feet in it. We enjoyed the view as we ventured on to the rocks. It was breathtaking. We bbq’d into the night and watch our campfire burn.

Day 2 – Sunday August 31, 2014

I woke up really early and was eager to hit the bike trails and explore the park further. I headed out by myself but with a great playlist. This was one of the best bike ride I’ve ever had. The terrain wasn’t too hard (small rolling hills) and the route was about 5km one way. The trail was lined with greenery and I would go through other campgrounds to explore their beach/shore.

My favourite was Granite Saddle. The beach was empty since it was early and the rocks were fun to climb. When you’re up on the rocks, the view is astonishing.

Granite Saddle

I biked to the end of the trail, lighthouse point and hike 10-15 mins to the point. It was peacefully and the view was rewarding. On the way back, I saw Harold’s Point which had cliffs paired with a sandy beach.

When I returned to our campsite, I was pretty warm so I quickly dipped myself in the waters before eating breakfast. Cooling down in the lake/bay is one of my favourite things to do! After waiting for a couple camping mates to run errands (shop for kayaks, LCBO trip), we finally went to lookout point for a 1 hour hike. It was a nice hike with a view overlooking the bay… But I liked the view from Granite more. We took some fun group shots before heading back for a late lunch/early dinner.

I took another cool bath in the lake with my biodegradable camp soap. Never done that before but I felt pretty clean afterwards! We grilled up some Costco ribs which everyone loved and ate a share of fishballs and veggies. We finished the meal with some campfire sweets, s’mores cones.

Day 3 – Monday September 1, 2014

Surprisingly, I slept in pretty late and people were already done eating breakfast. We packed up and loaded our cars to leave the site.

It was finally sunny and we decided to go swimming before driving back. We went to the boat launch area of Blind Bay where there was a small rocky beach. The water was cold but refreshing.

We headed back around 4pm and grabbed some Pho in Vaughan before going separate ways. It was a great camping trip –one of my favourites so far because Killbear is just that beautiful even in rainy cloudy weather! The company was fun as usual and I got to camp with some new faces. I barely had to plan anything which is an appreciated change too. Hopefully, next year I’ll get to visit Killarney, which is two hours north of Killbear and I’ve heard great things. I still haven’t been to Adqonquin yet either!
